Right LED Bulb

More and more people are shifting to energy friendly bulbs like light-emitting diodes (LEDs) after discovering they use less power, thereby reducing utility costs. Some countries, like Australia, have even passed laws that ban the aging incandescent light bulb to promote the use of newer, better alternatives. When choosing an LED light bulb, you might be surprised to find out that many of them don’t exactly come cheap, so think of them as an investment. While certainly more expensive, their efficiency allows you to enjoy an ROI in just months, so think long-term with LEDs. Here are a few things to remember when choosing a new LED light bulb.

Brightness and energy efficiency In the old days, the way to tell the brightness of a light bulb was to look at the number of watts it consumed. The higher the wattage rating, the brighter the bulb is. With LEDs, however, relying on the wattage rating is no longer practical, as these bulbs use so little power. Instead, look to lumens ratings. Lumens refer to the level of light as seen by the human eye. You can refer to the charts of hardware stores to have an idea of your desired lumens. Just remember that a regular 7- to 10-watt led can replace a 100-watt incandescent bulb, so don’t be shocked about the big difference.

Shape and size There are different shapes and sizes of LEDs for different uses. You can choose from candles, A-line, outdoor, and flood lights, just to name a few. Just remember what you’re going to be using the bulb for. Is it for an accent or decorative piece or something that you need outdoors? You can even find ones that can be used for big lighting jobs like spot lights or emergency lights. The choices are endless.

Color and temperature LEDs also come in different colors and temperatures. If you can’t stand those blue toned lights then pick out a warm toned bulb. This has a less harsh, yellow-toned light which is perfect for bedrooms and dining rooms. Colored LEDs are great for outdoor and landscape lighting.
